The Papers of Emily Jane Goodman ; 1954-2005.

The Papers of Emily Jane Goodman consists mainly of records from the years 1956-2004. The collection consists mainly of records of Goodman's career as an attorney, court decisions as a justice and publications as a writer throughout her career. A smaller quantity, but an important part of her life, documents her work in activism, specifically in the women's liberation (feminist movement) and tenants' rights issues of the 1970s. Goodman has served on many historical cases throughout her career. She is also notable for her activism and various essays and publications on women's and tenants' rights. The collection is comprised largely of typescript professional/personal correspondence, and manuscripts. A smaller section contains personal materials and memorabilia with photographs, diaries and day journals. The record groups include items on Judge Goodman's Professional Career as an Attorney, Judge/Justice and Panelist, Court Decisions (1984-2004), Publications, Correspondence (1955-2005), Activism (1970-1995) and Personal Materials. E.J. Goodman effectively formed many long-lasting relationships represented by her personal and professional correspondence. Her career as an attorney is marked by many notable clients and cases which speak for her professional success. Subsequently, E.J. Goodman's work as a judge and justice are marked by many well-regarded court decisions and some reversed decisions. Also documented in this collection are the various articles, columns, op-ed pieces, screenplays, and books which she has written. There are also memorabilia from her participation in various activist organizations as an attorney and as a judge and justice. Lastly, the Papers of E.J. Goodman document personal materials and memorabilia assembled throughout her life. There are some materials that have been restricted. They may however, be used with permission of the donor, Justice Emily Jane Goodman.

She attended night classes at Brooklyn College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 while working full time during the day.
